One mad Brit with a whole load of sled dogs, living in the far north of Norway. How did I end up here? It's a long story...
The concise version...
I came to Norway in 2002 on a 3-year exchange posting from the RAF to the Norwegian air force - a solitary Brit on a Norwegian station. I liked the way of life so much that I stayed. The intention was to transfer to the Norwegian air force, but the promise of citizenship fell through at the last minute.
So, suddenly without a job, I ended up as a kennel help on a husky farm in the north of Norway. 32 dogs to feed and look after, pups to train and much, much more. In return, I received food and lodging (15 m2 cabin), plus 2000 kroner (about £200) a month. Fantastic scenery, lovely dogs, and the chance to be outdoors all the time.
In 2006, I ended up where I am now - even further north. I'm now the organist and director of music for the parish of Vadsø in Finnmark county. I came here with 3 dogs from the husky farm, and what with some pairings (both intentional and unintentional), some purchases and sales, I now have 12 dogs of various ages.
We started off as Høyvik Huskies, but eventually changed to Prospect Huskies. Prospect refers both to the magnificent view I have over the Varanger Fjord, and to the fact that the dogs and I are starting out on something new and exciting.
Plan for the 2010-11 race season: Dec - Tanaløpet or possible Karasjok race Jan - Either Jarfjordløpet or Alta 2-day race Feb - Bergebyløpet 120km Mar - Finnmarksløpet 500km Apr - Pasvik Trail 300km
